Junior's Surf School: Where Surfing Finds Its Home

My life has two physical homes: Vologda and Toronto. But it also has spiritual dwellings scattered across the globe, found on every beach where I've chased the joy of surfing. Out of all these places, my surfing feels most at home in Barbados.

For many, comfort might seem incompatible with the hours of waiting under the scorching sun for that perfect wave, or battling currents and reefs to reach the lineup. But for surfers, these nuances are integral moments of our lifestyle. Comfort becomes redefined - not sought for oneself but for one's passion.

Barbados provides that comfort for my surfing. Here, I train with Junior, the patient guru of Junior's Surf School. He has taught me calmness and intelligence in the face of the ocean's challenges, honed my technique and turns on the board, and continues to guide me in the hardest skill of all: reading the ocean. This connection is why I return to the island as if it were home.

Freights Bay, a serene spot devoid of boiling waves or swirling pipes, is perfect for longboarders and newbies looking to improve without stress. Surfers from all corners gather here, many former students of Junior who fell in love with the island life and now surf daily.

The camaraderie among these surfers is palpable. Their efforts focused on the horizon and the sheer joy of catching a wave at the right moment, resonate deeply with my own surfing experiences. This shared passion creates a bond that transcends language and culture, filling the atmosphere with a unique blend of excitement and tranquillity. And then there are the awesome encounters with Barbados' massive sea turtles, gracefully cruising under our boards or popping up for a curious peek—a sight that always brings smiles.

Junior's Surf School embodies this spirit of community and learning. Junior himself went from a ten-year-old self-taught surfer to one of Barbados' top instructors. His patient, personal approach ensures every surfer, from newbies to pros, can enjoy and progress in the sport.

On my recent trip, I witnessed firsthand how Junior’s coaching turns a complete beginner into a capable surfer. Even my mom, who always feared the waves, stood up on a board for the first time under Junior's guidance. His clear instructions and positive vibe helped her conquer her fear and fall in love with surfing—a moment we'll never forget.

Reflecting on my journey, I realize how much Junior has influenced my life, so much so that I mentioned him in my book, "Once I Was Born." On my recent visit, I gave him a copy - a small thank you for how he's shaped my surfing and my life.
